The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design’s ARThouse Residence Hall was designed for the Spring 2014 comprehensive design studio with Jim Shields, FAIA. The goal of the studio was to completely design, detail and document a building on a budget as though it were a real project.

Although we were not given very much time to delve too deeply into design, I took as much time as I could to develope a residence hall which would fullfill MIAD’s objective of creating a “flagship” residence hall comparable to it’s competitiors: MICA, SCAD, CCAD, and SAIC.

The deisign itself focuses on the use of wedge-shaped trussed sky-walks between two single loaded bar buildings separated by a linear courtyard. The sky-walks allow students a more dynamic experience of courtyard on several different levels. The wedge shape theme is continued to the ground level where both the courtyard and pier act as negative space wedges. The building is clad in corrgugated cor-ten steel to compliement the sheet  piles of the riverwalk.
